What is #IGrowYourFood?

It’s the first global action day celebrating the people who sustainably grow and handle our food. Organic & agroecological farmers and advocates take to social media to share the challenges they face, how we can support them, and why they choose organic.

How it started

To tackle urgent issues like the climate crisis, malnutrition, and biodiversity loss, we need to listen to the farmers bearing the brunt of these crises and choosing to champion sustainability in our food systems. #IGrowYourFood gives them a platform to directly address citizens, consumers and policymakers – as well as connect with other farmers around the world.

Inspired by the principles of organic agriculture of IFOAM – Organics International, the global action day started in 2019. Today, it’s a moment for sustainability advocates, policymakers, consumers, and likeminded organisations around the world to come together on social media and hear directly from the people growing our food.

How it works

During Organic September, organic and agroecological farmers are invited to share videos, articles, or photo stories explaining why they #LuvOrganic on a designated day. Policymakers, organisations, advocates and citizens then amplify their messages, re-post their videos, and join the conversation on how organic can be a pathway to true sustainability.

#IGrowYourFood works both ways. We support farmers in making their voices heard, triggering meaningful change, and farmers share real, first-hand experiences and arguments to help decisionmakers do the right thing.

Anyone can join! Ahead of the action day, we’ll share the official #IGrowYourFood toolkit – complete with ready-to-post visuals, messages, and videos – to help you contribute to the global action day.

What happened in 2023?

The #IGrowYourFood action day took place on 14 September.

Farmers were invited to share their stories and why they choose organic, connecting with like-minded farmers around the world.

Citizens and policymakers can connect with the people growing our food sustainably, amplifying their voices by re-sharing their content, reacting to their stories, or posting a video or story of their own.

Our Mission

Many things connect us, wherever we are in the world. Food is one of them. We all have to eat! But how often do we directly hear from the people growing our food? Do we know the challenges they face and understand the work that goes into bringing healthy food to our tables?

The FAO estimates that the hidden environmental cost of world food production totals around USD 2.1 trillion annually. Understanding how our food systems work and how they influence farmers’ livelihoods can positively impact our day-to-day decisions and have a rippling effect on our communities, our society, and the policies shaping our food and farming systems.

By highlighting the work of sustainable, organic farmers, #IGrowYourFood shows how the choices we make at the supermarket directly impact livelihoods, natural resources, wildlife, and the climate crisis.
